Adhesive Tapes

Adhesion, Cohesion and Tack
There are three main properties that characterise a pressure-sensitive adhesive tape: Adhesion, Cohesion, and Tack.
Adhesion describes the bond strength of a substance to a contact surface. High or good adhesion means that a substance forms strong bonds with the substrate. Factors such as the adhesive type, substrate, time, and environment influence the adhesive strength.
Cohesion defines the internal strength of materials against forces parallel to the bonding area. The greater the cohesion of a material, the better it can resist forces applied to it. If the forces become too great, it can result in cohesive failure, where the material tears apart, but the adhesive surface to the substrate remains fully or partially intact.
Tack is the property of a pressure-sensitive adhesive to quickly adhere to a surface under light pressure. While adhesion describes how well an adhesive sticks to a surface, tack describes how quickly bonds are formed with the surface it contacts.
Depending on the application needs, each of these three properties can be modified, and the combination with different backing materials and liners leads to a broad variety of adhesive tape solutions optimised for specific substrates, environments, and against stressors.
