Bonding Tapes
Engineered to provide durable, long-lasting security where and when it matters most, our bonding tapes offer a flexible connection that stands the test of time. Combining an elastomeric foam substrate with a durable pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive, our high-quality bonding tapes have excellent resistance to a wide variety of environmental conditions and are an ideal choice for interior and exterior bonding applications.
Superior Bonding Performance for Demanding Industries
Saint-Gobain® has been collaborating with OEMs and Tier Suppliers for over 60 years to design and develop bonding and sealing solutions for demanding industrial applications, such as those in the automotive, aerospace, or construction industries.
This extensive history, combined with unrivalled access to unique foam polymers and adhesive chemistries, enables us to deliver the best product for your specific application. Our diverse portfolio of solutions includes:
- Acrylic bonding tapes: Our Norbond® Acrylic Bonding Tapes offer exceptional viscoelastic and adhesion properties, providing ideal bonding performance for many challenging applications. Biolink® Brand Acrylic Tapes are produced using unique solvent-free UV curing technology, making them an excellent choice where a combination of high bonding performance, and resistance to UV, thermal, chemical, and weather conditions is required.
- Polyurethane & polyethylene bonding tapes: Norbond Polyurethane Tapes combine a high-density, conformable polyurethane foam substrate with high-performance acrylic adhesive on both sides. The foam substrate absorbs and distributes stress forces across the entire bond line.
Our polyethylene (PE) tapes are cost-effective alternatives that meet most standard adhesion requirements for a variety of applications.
- Primerless bonding tapes: Norbond Acrylic Primerless Grade Tapes provide exceptional viscoelastic and adhesion properties for numerous interior and exterior applications. They are designed for strong primerless adhesion to challenging LSE and MSE substrates, excellent die-cutting capability, good static shear resistance, and rapid adhesion build-up, all while meeting the stringent demands of OEM specifications. Primerless attachment saves time and reduces complexity, while also minimising exposure to harsh chemicals in the production environment.
Based on this selection of trends and technologies, you can explore the features and benefits below for an initial selection of materials and designs that best meet your application needs.
Why Foam Tapes Have Different Chemistries
Foam tapes are supplied with different core chemistries to provide varying levels of conformability, or "stretchiness." An acrylic chemistry, for instance, is highly conformable (with low stress and a high strain percentage, or elongation), whereas PE is relatively stiff and will not elongate — but can endure higher stresses.
Before selecting a foam tape for your application, take into account factors such as the type of forces and environmental conditions. Types of forces include shear, peel, pluck and cleavage. Environmental conditions may involve interior/exterior use, temperature, humidity/UV/chemicals, static versus motion, among others.
Below are three types of tape along with their distinct advantages, general performance and typical applications.
| Acrylic | PUR | PE | |
| Distinct Advantages | UV resistance, durability, visco-elastic, low WVTR | Compressibility/conformance, die cutting | Stiffness, cost-effective |
| General Performance | High peel adhesion, high elongation, stress relaxation | Average peel, high shear and tensile adhesion, vibration damping | Torsional resistance, static shear |
| Typical Applications | Long parts, body side moulding, differential expansion | Emblems, wheel weights, optical blocking pads | Mirror mounting, signage |
Features & Benefits
|
Dissipates vibrations and distributes stress forces, resulting in a long-term bond |
|
Relieves forces caused by thermal expansion and contraction between bonded parts, thereby helping to maintain bonds during the temperature cycles. |
|
Reduces or eliminates mechanical fasteners, liquid adhesives, welds and subsequent surface refinishing, which saves time, increases productivity and reduces costs while improving overall product appearance. |
