Adhesive Tapes
The right pressure sensitive adhesive tape can make all the difference in an application, and Saint-Gobain® offers exceptional quality, OEM approvals and technical capability to customize. Our teams work hard to ensure there is an adhesive tape combination to fit your exact need. We work with a variety of substrates including fluoropolymers, polyimide, glass fabrics, foils, and polyester combined with acrylic, silicone, natural rubber and proprietary adhesive systems, making us experts in a broad range of materials.
Adhesion, Cohesion and Tack
There are three main properties that characterize a pressure-sensitive adhesive tape: Adhesion, Cohesion, and Tack.
Adhesion describes the bond strength of a substance to a contact surface. High or good adhesion means that a substance forms strong bonds with the substrate. Factors like the adhesive type, substrate, time and environment influence the adhesive strength.
Cohesion defines the inner strength of materials against forces parallel to the bonding area. The higher the cohesion of a material, the better it can resist forces applied to it. If the forces become too high, it can lead to cohesive failure, in which the material tears apart, but the adhesive surface to the substrate remains fully or partially intact.
Tack is the property of a pressure sensitive adhesive to quickly adhere to a surface under light pressure. While adhesion describes how well an adhesive sticks to a surface, tack describes how fast bonds are created with the surface it contacts.
Depending on the application needs, each of these three properties can be modified and the combination with different backing materials and liners lead to a broad variety of adhesive tape solutions optimized for specific substrates, environments and against stressors.
Achieving the right combination of adhesion, cohesion and tack from all the available options is important for high performance in the tape application. Our sales and technical teams have the know-how to find the best solutions.”

The most important questions for identifying the right adhesive tape solution
- What exactly do you want the tape to accomplish?
- What materials are being bonded and what are the characteristics of the bonding surfaces?
- How will the tape be applied?
- What temperature will the tape see in the application, and for how long?
- Will the application face exposure to moisture, UV, chemicals, solvents, outgassing, etc.?
- What load or stress will the tape need to support or resist?
Questions like these help your tape expert to identify the best solution for your needs. We have the know-how and capabilities to modify or design tapes that go beyond doing the job but can add significant value in many ways. Get in touch and find out for yourself.”
