Thermal Spray Masking Tape Options
A wide variety of thermal spray masking tapes are available, including silicone rubber-coated glass cloth, multi-layer, foil, and glass cloth.
- Silicone rubber-coated glass cloth tapes provide an ideal balance between several key properties. The silicone rubber layer supports thermal spray coatings, deflecting off the masking tape while maintaining excellent conformability, moderate abrasion resistance and clean masking edges. These tapes are often used throughout grit blasting and thermal coating steps, eliminating the expense associated with reapplying another layer of tape.
- Thick, multi-ply tapes are frequently used in the most demanding thermal spray processes, such as HVOF. While these tape configurations compromise conformability compared to thinner single-ply tapes, they deliver the abrasion and burn-through resistance required for high-temperature and high spray velocity applications.
- Foil tapes are highly conformable for parts with complex geometries or hard-to-reach areas, while offering excellent abrasion resistance. They maintain clean edges upon removal and are designed with clean removal adhesive.
- Glass cloth tapes are the most cost-effective thermal spray masking products available. They can be used as a base masking layer in high-temperature and high-pressure spray operations, or as the primary layer in less demanding processes. Glass cloth tapes are among the most conformable types of tape available for thermal spray applications.
