Bonding Tapes
Engineered to provide durable, long-lasting security where and when it matters the most, our bonding tapes offer a flexible connection that stands the test of time. Combining an elastomeric foam substrate with a durable pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive, our high-quality bonding tapes have excellent resistance to a wide variety of environmental conditions and are an ideal choice for interior and exterior bonding applications.
Superior Bonding Performance for Demanding Industries
Saint-Gobain® has been partnering with OEM’s and Tier Suppliers for over 60 years to design and develop bonding and sealing solutions for demanding industrial applications, for example in the automotive, aerospace or construction industry.
This long history, coupled with unparalleled access to unique foam polymers and adhesive chemistries, allows us to deliver the best product for your specific application. Our diverse portfolio of solutions includes:
- Acrylic bonding tapes: Our Norbond® Acrylic Bonding Tapes offer outstanding viscoelastic and adhesion properties to provide ideal bonding performance for many challenging applications. Biolink® Brand Acrylic Tapes are manufactured with unique solvent-free UV curing technology, making them an ideal choice where a combination of high bonding performance, UV-, thermal-, chemical- and weather-resistance is needed.
- Polyurethane & polyethylene bonding tapes: Norbond Polyurethane Tapes combine a high-density, conformable polyurethane foam substrate with high-performance acrylic adhesive on both sides. The foam substrate absorbs and distributes stress forces over the entire bond line.
Our polyethylene (PE) tapes are cost-effective alternatives that meet most of the standard adhesion requirements for many applications.
- Primerless bonding tapes: Norbond Acrylic Primerless Grade Tapes offer outstanding viscoelastic and adhesion properties for many interior and exterior applications. They are designed for strong primerless adhesion to challenging LSE and MSE substrates, excellent die-cuttability, good static shear resistance and fast adhesion build while still meeting the tough demands of OEM specifications. Primerless attachment saves time and complexity while reducing exposure to harsh chemicals in the production environment.
Based on this selection of trends and technologies, you can check the features and benefits below for a first selection of materials and designs that meet your application needs best.
Why Foam Tapes Have Different Chemistries
Foam tapes are provided with different core chemistries to provide varying levels of conformability, or "stretchiness." An acrylic chemistry, for example, is very conformable (with low stress and a high strain percentage, or elongation), but PE is fairly stiff and will not elongate — but can withstand higher stresses.
Before choosing a foam tape for your application, consider elements such as type of forces and environmental conditions. Type of forces include shear, peel, pluck and cleavage. Environmental conditions can involve the use of interior / exterior, temperature, humidity / UV / chemicals, static vs. motion, among others.
Below are three types of tape and their distinct advantages, general performance and typical applications.
| Acrylic | PUR | PE | |
| Distinct Advantages | UV resistance, durability, visco-elastic, low WVTR | Compressibility / conformance, die cutting | Stiffness, cost competitive |
| General Performance | High peel adhesion, high elongation, stress relaxation | Average peel, high shear and tensile adhesion, vibration dampening | Torsional resistance, static shear |
| Typical Applications | Long parts, body side molding, differential expansion | Emblems, wheel weights, optical blocking pads | Mirror mounting, signage |
Features & Benefits
|
Dissipates vibrations and distributes stress forces, resulting in a long-term bond |
|
Relieves forces caused by thermal expansion and contraction between bonded parts, thereby helping to maintain bonds during the temperature cycles |
|
Reduces or eliminates mechanical fasteners, liquid adhesives, welds and subsequent surface refinishing which saves time, increases productivity and reduces costs while improving overall product appearance |
|
With options available for automotive, transportation, construction, electronic and signage applications (and more), you’re sure to find the right product for your application |
