Cushioning vs. Gasketing: Understanding the Difference
Norseal materials are used for both cushioning and gasketing applications, each serving a distinct functional role depending on design requirements. While materials may appear similar, performance expectations and selection criteria differ significantly.
Gasketing applications are designed to create a reliable seal between mating surfaces, preventing the ingress or egress of air, moisture, dust, heat, or fluids. These applications prioritize low compression set, conformability, and resistance to temperature extremes, flame, smoke, and environmental exposure.
Cushioning applications, by contrast, are designed to absorb shock, vibration, or mechanical stress, improving durability and protecting components through energy absorption, load distribution, and vibration damping.
Many Norseal silicone foams, sponges, and solid materials are engineered to support both functions, allowing designers to balance sealing integrity with cushioning and protection in a single solution.
