Elevating Solar Performance with Norgard® UV Pro
"We are like tenant farmers chopping down the fence around our house for fuel when we should be using Nature's inexhaustible sources of energy—sun, wind and tide."
— Thomas Edison
Edison's words echo with renewed urgency as the solar industry undergoes rapid transformation. While the pace of growth for the solar sector varies across regions, with China leading the charge and emerging markets like India gaining momentum, the fundamental challenges remain consistent worldwide. From grid flexibility and cost reduction to material durability and deployment speed, the global solar community is united by a shared mission: to unlock the full potential of renewable energy.
As photovoltaic technologies scale, the conversation is shifting beyond cell efficiency. The focus now lies in developing smarter, more adaptable materials that not only optimize energy capture but also address critical demands such as weight, cost, and application flexibility.
In this blog, we sat down with Eliot Hield Ryder, Business Development Manager, EU to learn more about Norgard UV Pro and how it can help accelerate progress toward a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable energy future.
We’re shining the light on how film solutions, particularly within UV resistant front sheets, are stepping up in a big way.
In lightweight and flexible solar modules, the front sheet is far more than a passive barrier, it’s a performance-critical layer that directly influences energy yield, durability, and long-term reliability. Historically, PET (polyethylene terephthalate) has been the material of choice due to its affordability and ease of processing.
However, in regions with aggressive UVA exposure, such as South America, the Middle East, or Africa, PET-based solutions often fall short. These environments accelerate degradation, leading to yellowing, cracking, and diminished output. Most PET films can only be warranted for around five years or less in conditions with peak solar intensity, making them a risky choice for long-term solar investments.
This is where the concept of a UV barrier becomes essential. Advanced front sheet technologies like Norgard UV Pro are engineered to withstand the relentless impact of ultraviolet radiation, preserving optical clarity and mechanical integrity even in the harshest climates.
By resisting UVA-induced degradation, these materials create a barrier for the solar panel, extending the module lifespan, reducing maintenance costs, and ensuring consistent performance over time. For flexible and lightweight panels, often used in mobile, off-grid, or building-integrated applications, UV protection isn’t just a feature; it’s a foundational requirement.
But what makes Norgard UV Pro especially compelling?
The answer lies in its ability to deliver the same premium features associated with ETFE, such as high light transmission, water barrier protection, self-cleaning properties, and dust resistance, without the high cost or need for thick layers. By combining a thinner layer of ETFE for surface benefits with a UV Pro core, manufacturers can achieve a cost-effective hybrid solution that offers years of durability, superior optical performance, and low maintenance. This creates a middle ground between PET and full ETFE systems, delivering the best of both worlds with the added benefit of UV protection.
Yellowing reduces efficiency, shortens product lifespan, and erodes consumer trust. With Norgard UV Pro, manufacturers can meet rising global expectations for long-term performance, especially in high-UV regions, while maintaining competitive pricing and delivering panels that stay clear, crisp, and powerful for decades.
As the solar industry continues to diversify across geographies, installation types, and use cases, materials like UV Pro must be engineered with adaptability at their core. Today’s solar modules are no longer limited to rigid rooftop installations; they’re being integrated into curved surfaces, mobile systems, agricultural fields, and more. This shift demands front sheet materials that are not only durable and UV-resistant, but also flexible in form and function.
UV Pro is designed to meet this challenge head-on. Its flexibility allows it to conform to a wide range of module architectures, including lightweight and bendable formats that are critical for off-grid, portable, and building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). But flexibility in application is only half the story, processing flexibility is equally vital.
Manufacturers need materials that are compatible with existing lamination, encapsulation, and roll-to-roll production methods, without requiring costly retooling or specialized handling. UV Pro delivers on this, offering seamless integration into modern manufacturing workflows while maintaining high-performance standards.
No doubt, one of the greatest advantages of UV pro is the flexibility of the material itself, but also the flexibility in how it is offered:
- It is available in multiple thicknesses (widths up to 60” inches/ 152.4 centimeters)
- It is available in different finishes include matte and glossy
- It can be slit into various sizes to meet customer module requirements
- And, these offerings only scratch the surface of what’s possible!
At Saint-Gobain® Tape Solutions, we’re actively expanding the possibilities of UV Pro. Our team is working on developing a tape version featuring adhesive options, with or without liners, to simplify assembly and enable alternative panel constructions.
In parallel we’re working on advanced barrier solutions that offer protection comparable to high-end, low water vapor transmission films, but at a more accessible price point. While ultra-low WVTR films are typically reserved for niche applications like perovskite solar cells, they often come with high costs and limited scalability. UV Pro presents a practical alternative, offering meaningful moisture resistance, robust UV protection, and long-term durability.
In response to growing sustainability demands and tightening regulations, we’re also developing a non-PFAS version of UV Pro, specially designed to deliver the same visual clarity, UV protection, and durability while helping customers future-proof their product lines, meet ESG goals, and offer differentiated, sustainable solutions.
